PROS / eScan facilitates creation of a rescue disk to repair badly infected or damaged PCs.
CONS / Performance of the eScan firewall under stress testing is not the best.
VERDICT / The eScan firewall is not an improvement over the Windows firewall.
eScan Internet Security Suite from MicroWorld Technologies, Inc. (Mumbai, India) is firewall software designed to block notifications while you are gaming, prevent memory-intensive processes for laptops and offer comprehensive digital protection and parental control. Designers also bumped up protection against network-based attacks and made it possible to lock files and folders that are critical.
The firewall component of the eScan Internet Security Suite can monitor inbound and outbound traffic. It is set by default to filter incoming traffic. Unfortunately the firewall has difficulty protecting against common hacker techniques as it fails most leak tests.
Additional Security Features
Because the eScan suite is much more than a firewall, the product includes many other useful technologies and security features. For example, it can control the behavior of unwanted applications and protect against infections launched from USB memory devices or CD-ROMs. The product includes a feature called MicroWorld Winsock Layer, which scans traffic at the Winsock layer of the Windows operating system and either removes suspected data packets or releases clean traffic to the application layer.
The eScan Internet Security Suite checks for any suspicious activities on web pages that the user wants to access and it assesses the reputation of email senders based on a database of known senders. If an email appears from a domain associated with phishing schemes, eScan’s ability to check domain reputations allows it to protect users by not accepting the suspected traffic. The domain and IP reputation check is augmented by another technology that can detect attempts to install malware on the user’s system. With various levels of success, the host-intrusion prevention system attempts to combat:
- Denial of Service attacks
- Distributed Denial of Service attacks
Consistent with eScan’s multiple layering of complementary security features is the ability to automatically back up clean files. The backed-up files are encrypted in order to prevent them from being susceptible to infection. The backup feature allows eScan to restore a file from the backup folder whenever a system file becomes infected.
Ease of Use
eScan Internet Security Suite provides a pleasant user environment. Installation is easy and the configuration interface is intuitive to navigate. Graphics are crisp and elegant. Each configuration option contains a useful description. The product enables the creation of a rescue disk that can be trotted out at a later date in order to repair or clean a badly infected or damaged PC.
Help & Support
MicroWorld Technologies provides a wiki knowledge base and a user forum. The vendor also maintains a presence on Facebook and Twitter.
Support by telephone, chat or email is available 24/7 in English. Technical support by remote assistance is also available. Local language support in Germany, India, Malaysia and South Africa is available during local weekday business hours.
Although the eScan Internet Security Suite looks good and contains many well-designed and useful features, when subjected to state-of-the art hacking simulations, the firewall does not produce the best test results.
